Kuala Lumpur, 11 November 2006
YTL's wholly-owned utilities company, Wessex Water has been named Britain's top water and sewerage company. A report by industry regulator Ofwat revealed that Wessex Water is the only business to receive the maximum 7 stars for customer services for the second successive year.
Wessex Water was delighted to be named the country's top water and sewerage company. It follows Tuesday's release of industry regulator Ofwat's report on company performance across the last year in which Wessex Water achieved outstanding scores across the board.
The report makes positive reading for customers, revealing that Wessex Water is the only business to receive the maximum seven stars for customer services for the second successive year.
YTL Group managing director, Tan Sri (Dr) Francis Yeoh, said, "As owners of Wessex Water, we are most pleased with the company's achievement, especially with YTL's role in providing stability and certainty to the business. This achievement is further evidence that YTL stands for world-class service performance. It is part of our DNA.
"I thank our Lord Jesus for His blessings for providing the company with the wisdom, the values and the intellectual capital to achieve this."
Wessex Water chairman Colin Skellett said: "I am delighted that Ofwat has identified us as the top water and sewerage company for operational performance and customer service. Our staff have worked extremely hard to achieve this fantastic result for the business and thanks is due to them.
"I believe it is absolutely essential that our customers receive the very best quality of service and excellent value for money from all areas of Wessex Water. We try very hard and whilst we do not always get it right we will continue to seek ways to further improve our services.
"We have made an excellent start to our five year investment programme, meeting or exceeding all of our first year's targets, and this will enable us to continue to deliver even greater benefits for customers and the region's environment."
Every year Ofwat measures the performance of all water and sewerage companies in the areas of water supply, sewerage services, customer services and environmental impact. Out of a maximum 438, Wessex Water scored 416 points, an increase of eight on last year and the highest score in the country.
Mr Skellett continued: "What this means to customers is that we have fewer properties than ever before at risk of low pressure, sewer flooding, or unplanned interruptions.
"We continue to meet our leakage targets and in a summer marked by drought in some parts of the south, the careful management of our water resources has meant we once again avoided water restrictions - that's 30 years since our customers last experienced a hosepipe ban.
"Wessex Water is committed to delivering high standards of customer service and this is shown by the fact we are the only water and sewerage company to have received a seven star rating for customer services two years in a row. Wessex Water customers receive some of the highest quality standards in the UK and that means among the best in the world."
Last year, Wessex Water achieved 100% in several areas of customer service - 100% of billing contacts were answered within five days, 100% of written complaints were answered within 10 days, 100% of metered customers received a bill based on a meter reading.
In other customer service areas, the number of properties at risk of low water pressure fell to 196 from 224. And last year just eight properties experienced a supply interruption of greater than 12 hours, down from 58 the previous year.
Alleviating sewage flooding is one of Wessex Water's key goals and during the past year the number of properties at risk of this fell from 453 to 348, while the number of properties which actually experienced sewer flooding was 89, down from 131.
Wessex Water is now in the second year of its five-year ?800m investment programme. By 2010, the company aims to have provided first time sewerage schemes to 19 communities, carried out major improvements at Poole sewage treatment works and completed a ?25m rebuild and upgrade of Maundown water treatment works near Taunton.
